How an AI-Generated Test Caught a Broken "Quick Add" Popup Before It Cost Polarwise Sales

Some bugs hide in the paths customers actually take, not the ones teams think to check. This is the story of how an AI-generated collection page test caught exactly that kind of bug for PolarWise, before it turned into lost carts.

The Problem

Polarwise's collection pages included a small "+" icon on each product card — a quick-add shortcut that opens a product preview popup, letting shoppers pick a variant and add an item to cart without leaving the collection page. It's a small piece of UI, but it's also one of the most-clicked elements on the page, since it's faster than opening the full product page.

That popup had quietly broken. On many products, images and text inside the preview overlapped and misaligned. On some products, shoppers couldn't select a size at all — and the add-to-cart button was missing entirely. Anyone who clicked that "+" icon on an affected product hit a dead end: no variant picker, no way to add to cart, no obvious error either. They'd simply assume the item was unavailable and move on.

What We Did

The issue surfaced through one of Shoptest's AI-generated tests for the collection page — not through a manual review or a customer complaint.

1. The AI-generated collection page test ran on schedule, simulating the kind of interaction real shoppers make on collection pages.

2. The test recording couldn't complete. Instead of quietly failing or timing out unnoticed, it flagged that something on the page had broken mid-flow.

3. On closer inspection, we found two concrete issues: the Klarna logo in the popup wasn't rendering at the correct proportions, and the add-to-cart button was missing on some product cards inside the preview.

4. We traced it back to the product preview popup itself — the quick-view window triggered by the "+" icon on the product card — which was breaking across many products: overlapping images and text, and in some cases no way to select a size or complete the add-to-cart action at all.

5. We fixed the popup so the layout rendered correctly and the variant picker and add-to-cart button worked reliably across the product catalog.

The Solution (and the Result)

The product preview popup — one of the most-used entry points into checkout on the collection page — was fully repaired. Shoppers clicking the quick-add "+" icon can now reliably select a variant and complete an add-to-cart action from the popup itself, instead of hitting a broken window with no way forward.

Shoppers don't report - they just leave

We fixed the popup so the layout rendered correctly and the variant picker and add-to-cart button worked reliably across the product catalog.

Because this UI sits on high-traffic collection pages and gets clicked far more often than a typical edge case, the fix mattered more than its size suggested: it protected a shortcut that a meaningful share of shoppers use instead of visiting the full product page. Polarwise avoided the slow, invisible revenue loss that comes from a broken conversion path nobody was watching — the kind of issue that doesn't show up as an error, just as a quiet decline in a specific micro-conversion.

This is also a good example of why AI-generated tests are worth running even on "simple" storefront behaviors: the bug wasn't caught by manual QA, a support ticket, or a dashboard metric. It was caught because a synthetic test tried to do exactly what a real shopper does, on a schedule, and refused to silently pass when something didn't work.

What is AI-generated testing, and why does it matter?

Instead of hand-recording every customer journey, Shoptest can generate a test automatically for common storefront behaviors — things like checkout, search, cart editing, quick add to cart, and collection filtering. The system builds a synthetic version of a real shopper's path and runs it on a schedule, so a store gets continuous coverage without a team having to manually script and maintain every scenario.

This matters because the highest-traffic paths on a store aren't always the ones anyone remembers to test by hand. Collection pages in particular are full of small interactive elements — quick-view buttons, mini variant pickers, add-to-cart shortcuts — that are easy to overlook in a manual QA pass but get clicked constantly by real shoppers. An AI-generated test doesn't get bored, doesn't skip steps, and doesn't assume "that part probably still works."

Stop letting broken UI quietly cost you conversions.
